Education is the foundation of social and economic advancement. Our Education Initiative provides accessible, high-quality learning opportunities designed specifically for disadvantaged individuals and communities who face barriers to traditional educational pathways.
Literacy and Language Programme: We offer Dutch, French, English, and German language courses for adults, including newcomers to Belgium. Our language instructors use communicative teaching methods that focus on real-world skills — from writing a job application to navigating daily life. Classes are held in community centres across Hasselt and surrounding municipalities, with flexible scheduling to accommodate working adults and parents.
Vocational Skills Training: Our vocational programme provides hands-on training in high-demand fields including hospitality, construction, logistics, healthcare support, and digital services. Each course runs for 3-6 months and includes a practical placement with a local employer. Upon completion, participants receive a recognised certificate that enhances their employability.
Digital Literacy Workshops: In today's connected world, digital skills are essential. We offer free workshops covering basic computer skills, internet navigation, email communication, online banking, and job search platforms. These sessions are particularly aimed at older adults and those with limited prior exposure to technology.
Youth Mentorship: Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds often lack access to professional role models. Our mentorship programme pairs trained volunteer mentors with young people aged 14-25 for a one-year period. Mentors provide guidance on education choices, career planning, and personal development through regular one-to-one meetings and group activities.
Breaking the cycle of poverty requires more than education — it demands tangible economic opportunities. Our Economic Empowerment programme equips individuals and families with the financial knowledge, tools, and support needed to build sustainable livelihoods and achieve genuine economic independence.
Financial Literacy Programme: Many individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds have had limited exposure to financial management. Our financial literacy programme covers essential topics such as budgeting, saving, understanding credit, managing debt, and planning for the future. Sessions are delivered in small groups with culturally sensitive materials in multiple languages.
Micro-Enterprise Support: We provide aspiring entrepreneurs from disadvantaged communities with the knowledge and resources to start and sustain small businesses. This includes business planning workshops, one-to-one mentoring, access to small start-up grants (up to €500), and ongoing support through our network of volunteer business professionals.
Job Placement Assistance: We work directly with local employers in Limburg to create pathways to employment for our programme participants. Our job placement service includes CV preparation, interview coaching, workplace readiness training, and follow-up support during the first months of employment. We maintain active partnerships with over 30 local businesses committed to inclusive hiring.
Social Enterprise Development: Beyond individual enterprise, we support the development of social enterprises that address community needs while generating sustainable income. We provide seed funding, governance advice, and market access support for community-based economic initiatives.
Sustainable social change happens when communities come together. Our Community Development programme fosters social cohesion, cultural understanding, and grassroots engagement that builds stronger, more inclusive neighbourhoods across Belgium.
Neighbourhood Engagement: We work at the grassroots level to bring together residents from diverse backgrounds through community events, neighbourhood clean-up initiatives, and shared projects. These activities build social capital and create the interpersonal connections that form the foundation of resilient communities.
Cultural Exchange Programmes: Cultural misunderstanding often lies at the heart of social division. Our cultural exchange programme organises intercultural events, language cafés, international food festivals, and storytelling evenings that celebrate the rich diversity of our communities. These events are open to all residents and create spaces for genuine cross-cultural dialogue.
Volunteer Coordination: Y'abal engages over 150 active volunteers who contribute their time, skills, and passion to our programmes. We provide structured volunteer opportunities, training, and support that benefit both the volunteers and the communities they serve. Volunteering with Y'abal is a meaningful way to give back while developing new skills and connections.
Advocacy and Awareness: Beyond direct service, Y'abal raises awareness about social inequality and advocates for policies that support disadvantaged groups. We publish research reports, participate in policy consultations, and collaborate with other civil society organisations to amplify the voices of those we serve.
